Vocal Recital by Arijit Mahalanabis |
|
Arijit Mahalanabis began his studies in music under the guidance of Shahana Banerjee of New Delhi. After moving to the United States, he spent many years in self-directed study. Eventually he became associated with RAAGA, a group of Carnatic musicians at Penn State University, and in their company he learned much about Carnatic music.
After coming to Seattle in 1999, he began studying Dhrupad and Khayal under the guidance of Shantha Benegal. This training was later supplemented with guidance in music theory, compositions and raga theory from Ramesh Gangolli. Over the years, he has been influenced by numerous other musicians as well.
Arijit’s biggest passion is teaching Hindustani music, which he does at SIMA, as the voice faculty. After over a decade of work in the Seattle area, trying to promote and grow Indian music, Arijit has decided to focus his attention on teaching and research.
